Kathleen Shields

Kathleen Shields is from Syracuse, New York, and attended Mount Holyoke College (1973-1977) and the University of New Mexico, where she received her M.A. (1980) and M.F.A. (1982) in Studio Art. She has been an arts writer, editor, and curator since 1979; was Associate Editor for Artspace Magazine (1982-1986); founding director of Graham Gallery and Kathleen Shields Contemporary Art Projects (1986-1992); Assistant to Ray A. Graham and Administrative Director of the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation (1986-2009); Administrator of Walter De Maria’s The Lightning Field for Dia Art Foundation (1987-2016); and Executive Director and President of the Frederick Hammersley Foundation (2009-2022). She is currently an advisor to the Frederick Hammersley Fund for the Arts at the Albuquerque Community Foundation and occasionally writes about art and other topics from her home in Corrales where she has lived since 1995.
